Regulation issue snow smocks were in use before the war only with mountain troops. However, after 1943 they were issued in greater number to the frontline fighting troops. They were made of light, white fabric and came in various models, usually reaching down to any length between the knees and ankles. Cut similar to shirts, the smocks were loose-fitting to be worn over the equipment, and buttoned in front by four to six buttons down to the waist. While usually without a collar, it sometimes did have a sewn-on hood or a wide wind collar. The sleeves were normally wide, often with drawstring closures at the end. There were patterns with sleeves that reached only to the elbow. Prewar models were often with large patch-on side pockets without flaps, and with a pocket with buttoned flap on the left side of the breast. Howerer, war-time models were usually without pockets.
